About Interplast

What We Do

Interplast Australia & New Zealand sends teams of volunteer plastic & reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses to developing countries in the Asia Pacific Region to provide free medical treatment and training.

Volunteers

Each member of an Interplast program is fully qualified in their field of expertise and VOLUNTEER their time to participate in an Interplast activity

Treatment

Interplast volunteers provide free treatment to people living with a disability from a congenital condition such as cleft lip and palate, or an acquired condition such as burn scar contractures. Treatment is targeted to the indigent population who would otherwise not be able to afford to access services

Training

Interplast assists with developing local capacity to provide plastic and reconstructive surgery services by providing training and mentoring programs for medical and allied health professionals. Interplast programs are training programs — leaving a legacy long after the team has gone

These are some photos of Interplast programs.

About Operation Smile

What we do

Attend to the immediate needs of children with facial deformities: In a surgical procedure that can take as little as 45 minutes to repair a cleft lip, a child’s life can be changed for ever.

Educate: Operation Smile Australia medical volunteers educate local medical practitioners in surgical techniques, pre and post operative care, hygiene and medical equipment operation and care. Operation Smile tailors education programs based on specific medical infrastructure. The education plan is the result of a collaborative analysis of that country — the number of healthcare workers present, the socio-economic status, the types of treatment currently available and more.

Foster Sustainable Development: Operation Smile develops sustainable business structures in its partner countries, giving them the ability to finance and deliver medical care independently year-round.

Operation Smile is at the forefront of efforts to ensure every child born with a cleft lip and cleft palate or correctable facial deformity is treated as early in life as possible.

Operation Smile Australia works to provide local medical practitioners with the skills to treat children on their own, with their own resources, their own volunteers and their own equipment and supplies.

Operation Smile Australia works to a five mission plan to deliver a locally focused sustainable surgery program. Over the life of these five missions, Operation Smile Australia works with local healthcare practitioners and administrators to deliver the following outcomes:

  1. Provide surgery for children and young adults with severe craniofacial deformities. Between five and eleven patients will receive surgery on each medical mission.

  2. Provide education to hospital staff in surgical techniques, patient care and equipment operation and care.

  3. Implement standards of care and protocols.

  4. Facilitate clinical observerships for local health care practitioners in Australia.

  5. Improve the level and quality of theatre equipment where required.

  6. Provide follow-up visits to assist with ongoing advice, education and standards of care.
