2SM Radio News interviewed Dr Tony Kane.
NEWSREADER: The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons has criticised private health insurance providers now requiring patients to obtain pre-approval for surgeries. The changes came into effect in June. President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons Dr Tony Kane says patients requiring surgery after skin or breast cancer treatment are among those being targeted.
ANTHONY KANE: The decision whether somebody needs an operation no longer belongs to the patient and the doctor between them making a decision. The insurers are making that decision for them. In other words, they’re saying that despite something having a Medicare rebate or being considered necessary by the patient and the doctor, the health insurers are going to decide whether that’s necessary.
