BreastScreen NSW have written to ASPS advising NSW Members of BreastScreen result time frames.

Frequently mammogram results take 14 days before the woman is notified of a normal or abnormal result. In some instances this year, BreastScreen have wanted to recall a woman for further investigation of an abnormal mammorgram and the patient has undergone cosmetic breast surgery in the interim resulting in delays in evaluation and difficulties identifying the area of original concern.

The impotance of waiting for written notificaton of a normal mammogram before surgery is undertaken is imperative. If a mammorgram result is required urgently, it may be possible to fast track the film reading, however with each mammogram read independently by two, sometimes three radiologists, result time frames are dependent on the availability of radiologists at the time.
