Plastic Surgeons condemn cosmetic surgery Apps targeting young girls

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons has condemned Cosmetic Surgery Apps targeted at young girls as irresponsible and disturbing.

The Apps engage users via surgery ‘simulators’ to alter bodies and faces with procedures such as nose jobs, tummy tucks and liposuction.

“Not only do Apps like these add to the considerable pressures young people already face over physical appearance, they trivialises cosmetic surgery which is something that should only be undertaken by adults, and only after considered consultation and research,” said President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr James Savundra.

“Cosmetic surgery, like any surgery, is conducted under anaesthesia and carries a level of risk. To reduce it to something that is done by a swipe or tap of a phone screen is simply irresponsible and cultivates an unrealistic perception of the potential dangers of cosmetic surgery.”

“Let me be clear, this is not comparable to changing a hairstyle or putting on nail polish: it is invasive, serious surgery.”

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons has campaigned for many years for protections for minors and earlier this year welcomed new guidelines around cosmetic surgery released by the Medical Board of Australia that include cooling off periods ahead of cosmetic procedures and counselling for minors.

“In recent years we have been concerned by media reports of young girls undergoing a range of cosmetic procedures, particularly around school formals or as gifts for HSC results.

“Except in the case of severe congenital deformities there should be no need for a minor to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure.”

“Children should be left alone to fully explore and discover who they are without pressure to conform to some idealised perception of beauty and for that reason we support calls for this App to be removed by Apple,” said Dr Savundra.
