ASPS Statement re “Rib Contouring”
The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) are aware of emerging public interest in rib contouring surgery.
While rib contouring is a relatively new procedure in Australia, specialist plastic surgery training is comprehensive and the core surgical skills required to perform this type of procedure, and manage potential complications, form part of this training.
Members of ASPS and ASAPS comply with AHPRA guidelines when assessing patients for cosmetic surgery, including rib contouring. For rib contouring, these guidelines include preoperative consultations, a thorough individual assessment by the treating surgeon, psychological screening for body dysmorphic disorder and a mandatory cooling-off period before surgery is booked.
Cosmetic surgery is real surgery and carries potential risks and complications. ASPS and ASAPS strongly recommend that anyone considering rib contouring consult a suitably qualified specialist plastic surgeon in Australia to fully understand the procedure, its risks, likely outcomes and available alternatives.
Patients should always take time to consider their options; ensure they are well informed and consider seeking a second opinion.
ASPS and ASAPS caution patients against travelling overseas for any cosmetic surgery, including rib contouring, where safety standards and access to appropriate follow-up care may not match Australian requirements.
