Skin Cancer – Choosing a surgeon

Choosing a surgeon you can trust

Skin cancer may be treated by a dermatologist or a Specialist Plastic Surgeon. A Specialist Plastic Surgeon will often be involved when surgical removal or reconstruction is required, particularly where the planned procedure needs careful consideration of both function and appearance.

In Australia, “Specialist Plastic Surgeon” is a protected specialist title used by surgeons with approved specialist training in plastic surgery. ASPS states that Specialist Plastic Surgeons complete a minimum of 12 years of medical and surgical education, including at least five years of specialist postgraduate training. Qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeons become Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and may use the letters FRACS after their name. They are trained and accredited to perform invasive reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.

  1. Check Accreditation

Check that your surgeon is an ASPS member before proceeding. An ASPS member can display the ASPS logo and an accreditation certificate, but the most direct check is to search for them using the ASPS Find a Surgeon directory. ASPS membership criteria are stringent and membership is by invitation only for eligible FRACS specialist surgeons.

  2. Your Care Team

Your care may also involve a GP, dermatologist or other specialists, depending on the diagnosis and treatment required. Ask who will be responsible for removing the cancer, reviewing the pathology result, performing any reconstruction and providing follow-up care.

  3. Understanding the procedure and risks

Before agreeing to surgery, make sure you understand the proposed procedure, alternatives, possible risks and complications, expected scarring, recovery and aftercare. Ask whether your surgeon performs the procedure regularly and whether it will take place in an accredited facility. Your surgeon should explain the benefits, risks and limitations clearly so you can make an informed decision.
