TGA post-market review of certain breast implants
Sydney. October 17, 2025: TGA post-market review of certain breast implants. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) recently undertook a post-market review of certain breast implants that contain micro transponders (radiofrequency identification devices).
The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has received information that the TGA identified that, in some cases, the micro transponder may interfere with MRI imaging, potentially causing visual artefacts that could obscure results.
Although theTGA has received no reports of patient harm or adverse events associated with these implants, they have cancelled these devises from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

ASPS would like to inform any concerned patients that:
- Removal of the implants is not required and womenwith breast implants should feel confident and safe in their choice.
- Patients (in particular, high-risk breast cancer patients) should be cautionary about the risks associated with the device’s potential interference with MRI and should speak to their surgeon and/or radiographer prior to having an MRI.
- Patients who have these devices in situ should discuss and determine any ongoing processes or modalities, if required.
Patient safety remains The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons highest priority and the Society will continue to provide updated guidance as required.
