What is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is an increasingly common surgical procedure for women who have had a mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can be both a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer or other condition.

The timing of a breast reconstruction is very important as it is a procedure whose purpose is to rebuild a new breast or breasts to resemble a natural breast in appearance and form which can be performed immediately after, or sometime after a mastectomy.

There are two main types of breast reconstruction, they include implant reconstruction and flap reconstruction. In implant reconstruction, an implant is placed under the skin and muscle to recreate the shape of the breast. In flap reconstruction, skin, fat and muscle are taken from elsewhere on the body to make the new breast, so the procedure that is best for you will depend on your age, general health, size and shape of the other breast, and available body tissue.

CHOOSING A SURGEON YOU CAN TRUST

A key component for breast reconstruction involves selecting the right surgeon for you. It is important that you choose an accredited plastic surgeonfor safe and effective breast reconstruction. We highly recommend you look for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) logo and certificate on a surgeons website, or ask for this in clinic.

Membership in ASPS is by invitation only for FRACS-certified surgeons who have undergone extensive training. A FRACS accreditation ensures expertise in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery, backed by the Australian Medical Council.
