CHOOSING A SURGEON YOU CAN TRUST
Plastic surgeons often work closely with breast surgeons. A plastic surgeon has access to the full range of reconstructive techniques. They can recommend and perform surgery that is individualised to the patient and most likely to provide a natural result. A breast surgeon is usually a general surgeon who has done additional training in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. This includes performing surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), to remove the breast cancer, and often some lymph nodes.
Some breast surgeons also perform some reconstructive procedures, most commonly implant reconstructions. In contrast a plastic surgeon primarily specialises in reconstructive procedures, including the full range of breast reconstructions after cancer surgery.
We highly recommend you look for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) logo and certificate on a surgeons website, or ask for this in clinic.
Membership in ASPS is by invitation only for FRACS-certified surgeons who have undergone extensive training. A FRACS accreditation ensures expertise in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery, backed by the Australian Medical Council.
