Mr Michael Findlay

Research Biography

I am an Academic Reconstructive Plastic, Hand and Microsurgeon from Melbourne, Australia currently based at Stanford University in the United States with Professor Geoffrey C. Gurtner, where I am a Fulbright Scholar, Visiting Assistant Professor (Research), Clinical Instructor and the inaugural Stanford Applied Regenerative Medicine (SARM) Fellow. My translational stem cell and tissue engineering research focuses on understanding acquired defects in regenerative capacity and how these can be managed to achieve reproducible, transformative tissue production and regeneration for clinical purposes. During my PhD under Professor Wayne Morrison at the O’Brien Institute in Melbourne, Victoria, I developed the world’s first large animal model for tissue engineered breast reconstruction. NeoPec is the start-up company headed by Professor Morrison to commercialize this research and recent clinical trials have demonstrated proof of concept for this tissue engineered breast reconstruction approach, but the technique was not universally effective. In my clinical practice I focus on reconstructive surgery with a particular interest in perforator-based flap reconstruction (both loco regional and free), head and neck, surgical oncology and hand surgery.
