Assoc Prof Mark Gianoutsos

Research Biography

A/Prof Gianoutsos graduated from The University of Sydney with Honours in Medicine and Surgery. He attained a number of prizes and awards in Medicine, Paediatrics and Surgery during this time. He initially trained at The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Surgery in General before being offered a position as an Advanced Trainee in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Plastic Surgical Training took him initially to Melbourne under the mentorship of Professor G. Ian Taylor. He undertook clinical training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgery, as well as devoting three years to completing a Doctorate in Medicine (a research degree, similar to a PhD) at The University of Melbourne investigating the neurovascular territories (nerve and blood supply) of the skin and muscles. His final year of training was at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospitals, where he was Senior Registrar. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Plastic Surgery) in 1995 and also attained a number of scholarships, prizes and awards during this time.

Upon completion of his Fellowship, he undertook a Postgraduate Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital and then a Postgraduate Fellowship at New York University Hospital in the Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery under the mentorship of Professor Joseph G McCarthy. He was Craniofacial and Cosmetic Surgery Fellow for this time as well as having a laboratory research position.

Upon returning to Sydney, he took up Visiting Medical Officer positions at The Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital (of which he is Head of Department) and the Royal Hospital for Women, as well as beginning his private practice. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor, conjoint with the University of New South Wales.

He was appointed as an examiner in Plastic Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2011 and in 2016 was elected Deputy Senior Examiner.

He is also the Director of The Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery Research Unit at The Prince of Wales and University of New South Wales and has had a string of Research Fellows and students whom he has supervised since 1996, both from Australia and abroad, who themselves have been awarded a number of higher degrees including PhD and Masters of Surgery.

A/Prof Gianoutsos has been involved in Interplast Australia and its charitable surgical missions to Indonesia and the Philippines.
